Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:

When we talk too much and listen too little, we communicate to others that we think our ideas are much more important than theirs. The above bible verse advises us to reverse this process. We have two ears and one mouth, so we should listen more than we say. We must listen with the intent to understand and not with the intent to reply. Love is shown in listening not in always having a word to say.
Ralph Nichols once said:
The most basic of all human needs is the need to understand and be understood. The best way to understand people is to listen to them.
