Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.
Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;)
That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.
Children are not commanded to disobey God in obeying their parents. They are not asked to be subservient to domineering parents. Children are to obey while under their parents’ care, but the responsibility to honor parents is for life.
By the way, obey means to do as one is told; to honor means to respect and love.
This week many celebrate Mother’s Day. Lavish praises upon your mother who has raised you with her strength, virtue and diligence. She is your first nurturer, teacher, encourager, coach and supporter. Many times her steadfast faith holds a family together. It is often her faith that is the foundation for your own beliefs.
It is not easy to be a mother. So often mothers have to put aside their own needs to look after their children. They support them through good times and bad, and patiently guide them through the years with love and care. We love mothers while they are here, and miss them when they are gone.
Motherhood is such a high and holy calling. It is so noble that God’s command to honor our parents is the first commandment that is given in conjunction with a promise.
To all mothers, I wish you a Blessed Mother’s Day. May all of you continue to be encouraged, inspired and be great examples whom your children look to!
